How to shut down the Internet?

The answer is simply not possible.

You will have to shut down everything basically. Try to shut down all Internet service providers

(ISPs), routers, switches, telecommunication networks, satelites, dishes, cutting all cables, and

you will see everything just stops functioning.

No banking, no transactions, no phone calls, no electricity …

The Iran government has tried to cut off the Internet access to its protestors during its election

recently, but failed.

Users can still use other ways to access the Internet by using software and services to by pass

government censorship. Users can be linked to other providers that route traffic via the networks

to the destinations.

Proxy servers and web censor software are widely used by governments and organisations to block

users from accessing some harmful or unwanted websites.

The Chinese government has tried to force computer vendors to pre-install censorship software for

all new computers to block pornography from the 1st of July, 2009. The software is called Green

Dam-Youth Escort.

We all know it’s not true. Their main goal is to block any site with content deemed politically

objectionable. What a brilliant idea!

But will it work?

The answer is again not possible.

Users can use one of the following ways to access any website they want:

1. Disable the offending software.

2. Uninstall the offending (damn) software.

If the above are not possible, goto 3.

3. Remove the operating system (presumably Windows), and install a pirated copy of the operating

system.

4. Remove the operating system and install GNU/Linux or BSD.

5. Installed GNU/Linux or BSD side by side with the current operating system and dual boot it.

6. Run a live copy of GNU/Linux e.g. Puppy, Mint, Ubuntu, openSuse, crunchbang ….

7. Nothing is impossible. It’s a free country!
