Normally viruses hide in email attachments. Files downloaded from the Internet like music, videos, games can contain viruses.

Ways to protect your computers:
- Install anti-virus software, and keep it updated.
- Virus scan your system regularly.
- Virus scan any attachment from email or any other media like USB stick before opening it.
- Do not open and read spam email.
- Disable the auto preview function of your email client.
- Do not install pirated copy of software.
- Do not click links sent to you in unknown email or instant messenger.
- Do not connect your computer to the Internet.
- Uninstall Windows.
- Install Linux

Symptons of virus infection

Common symptons of computers running on Microsoft Windows infected with a virus or worm are:

- Slow. The computer is getting slower and slower to start up and shut down. Applications take longer to load. Websites take longer to load. It takes longer to open a file or a folder. The mouse is not that responsive any more. Music and videos are not playing correctly.
- Frozen. The computer screen is frozen. You are unable to do anything. Applications freeze. Mouse not clickable.
- Crash. The computer crashes with blue screen, fatal error, or illegal operations. It may shut down by itself or unable to restart.
- Programs dead. Some programs may not run and need re-installing.
- Files missing. Some files or folders disappear from your hard disk.
- Devices not working. Drivers driving devices like CDROM corrupted and thus the CDROM is not working.
