Wireless networking or WiFi security has become a big concern in organizations and at home.

When you plug in a wireless access point (WAP) or a router/modem with wireless capability in your network or at home straight out of the box, the default settings normally are not set correctly for the sake of security.

Anyone with a wireless device such as a handheld organizer, mobile phone, laptop or netbook within the range can use your network and Internet access.

The chance of finding free Internet access in larger cities is very high. Hackers can use your bandwidth to download files or send spams. They can chew up your bandwidth and access your files. It is a criminal offence in many countries.

Ways to secure your WiFi:

  • Use a laptop with wireless to detect any WAP in your office or at home.
  • Set up encryption protocol such as wired equivalent privacy (WEP) or wireless protected access (WPA) where an encryption key is required in order to access the network. Try to use the WPA instead of WEP.
  • Disable the service set identifier (SSID) broadcasting.
  • Use media access control (MAC) address filtering to connect to your network.
